In both my practices as an artist and as a scientist, I am interested in exploring the components of the self. Whether that is through the biologic miasma of DNA within cells and ligaments within muscles, or if that is through representations of cultural cliches and social paradigms, my art challenges perceptions of the self. Through distortion of form and color my work challenges the societal archetype of the body and its relation to the soul. Through macabre representations of fragments of the internal and external anatomy, I attempt to alienate the body from our preconceptions of the human figure. Through the alteration of color, size, and composition as well as the distortion of proportions, I inundate these forms with an emotional significance and unique identity, each equating to an aspect of the self. By exploring the boundaries of the anomalous and the wanton, I hope to challenge the viewer’s interpretation of their identity in relationship to both physical form and outward appearance.
